What is an English cafe?

An English cafe is a space where customers can practice English through language exchange or structured conversations with native and fluent speakers. These cafes provide a relaxed environment for learning, often offering drinks and snacks.

I don’t have any teaching experience, am I eligible to apply?

While teaching experience is preferred, it is not required to apply.

Do I need a university degree to teach at CHATSHACK?

No. You do not need a university degree to teach at CHATSHACK.

I am not a native English speaker. Can I still teach at CHATSHACK?

Yes. While you do not need to be a native English speaker, your English proficiency must be at a native level.

What are the requirements to teach at CHATSHACK?

You must be able to speak, read, and write English fluently. While you do not need to be a native speaker, a strong understanding of the language is essential. Additionally, you must be eligible to work in Japan and have a laptop for business-related tasks.

Do I need to speak Japanese?

No, Japanese is not required to teach at CHATSHACK.

Can I apply to CHATSHACK from overseas?

Please only apply if you are in Japan or will be in Japan in the near future with a valid visa that allows employment.

Who will I teach at CHATSHACK?

At CHATSHACK, you will teach English to a diverse range of learners, including but not limited to career professionals, university students, office workers, and housewives.

Do I need to prepare lessons for CHATSHACK?

No. Lesson preparation is not required at CHATSHACK.

Can I choose my working hours at CHATSHACK?

We offer some flexibility with working hours. While we can't guarantee your preferred hours and days, we strive to accommodate everyone’s needs.

Is there overtime?

There is overtime occasionally, but typically not expected.

Do I need to teach children at CHATSHACK?

No. All students at CHATSHACK are adults.

Is there a dress code at CHATSHACK?

CHATSHACK has a casual dress code.

Can I teach only in-person or only online at CHATSHACK?

As a teacher at CHATSHACK, we expect you to teach both in-person and occasionally online. However, the main service is in person.

Can I exchange contact information with students?

No. Exchanging contact information is prohibited.

Do I need to sell textbooks or learning materials to students?

No. We do not sell textbooks or learning materials at CHATSHACK.

Do I get paid if there are no students?

Yes. If there are no students you will still be expected to work on other tasks.

What duties will I have other than teaching?

Apart from teaching, you will contribute to the growth of the business through involvement in marketing planning and implementation, industry research, product development, and process improvement.

Can I use Japanese during the lesson?

While Japanese is not prohibited, we encourage using English as much as possible to provide students with the maximum opportunity for practice.

Do I need a visa to work at CHATSHACK?

Yes. A valid visa is required to work at CHATSHACK.

Does CHATSHACK sponsor visas?

We do not sponsor visas, but visa renewal is possible.

Can I work at CHATSHACK on a temporary visitor visa?

No. The temporary visitor visa is not a valid visa to work in Japan.

What visa do I need to be eligible to work at CHATSHACK?

To work at CHATSHACK, you must have a valid visa that permits employment in Japan, such as the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities and International Services visa, Instructor visa, Student visa, or Working Holiday visa.

Benefits & Support

What kind of benefits does CHATSHACK provide?

Teachers receive a fixed salary with performance-based bonuses. Transportation is covered up to ¥10,000 per month. Additional perks include a freeflowing drink and snack bar, free lunch or dinner on national holidays, team events, milestone celebrations, and more. We also hosts international events every month. Teachers are welcome to join after their shifts and enjoy some drinks.

Does CHATSHACK pay for transportation?

Yes. Up to ¥10,000 per month for transportation will be reimbursed.

How and when am I paid?

Full-time employees are paid on the 25th of each month, while part-time emlployees are paid on the 10th.

Do I need a Japanese bank account?

Yes. A Japanese bank account is required.

Does CHATSHACK file my taxes?

CHATSHACK files taxes for full-time employees.

Holidays & Vacations

Do I have set days off or will they change week to week?

CHATSHACK aims to maintain a consistent month-to-month schedule with the same days off each week. However, there may be occasional adjustments, and we will do our best to accommodate each teacher's needs.

Do I get paid vacation days?

Full-time employees are entitled to 10 days of paid leave after completing six months of probation. For each subsequent year of service, an additional day is granted, up to a maximum of 20 days. For further details, refer to Japan's labor laws.

Do I need to work on Japanese national holidays?

CHATSHACK is closed on Mondays, which is when most national holidays fall. In cases where a national holiday does not fall on a Monday, teachers are expected to work.

Do I need to work on Christmas day?

No. CHATSHACK has a winter break that starts just before Christmas Eve and ends shortly after New Year's Day.

Can I take time off whenever I want?

Employees are advised to notify us at least one month in advance when requesting time off, giving us ample time to arrange for cover teachers.
